Inspired by the quiet beauty of early summer, this composition captures a wild meadow just as the day begins. Soft morning light rises through a gentle veil of mist, illuminating delicate cow parsley and grasses in the foreground, while distant trees sit quietly against the glow of the horizon.
Working in layered acrylics on board, you’ll be guided step by step through the process I use in my own paintings to build atmosphere, depth and light. We’ll begin by establishing a soft, luminous background, gradually developing the landscape through transparent layers, tonal contrast and subtle texture.
Particular focus is given to creating that sense of early morning stillness — allowing light to move through the painting, rather than sitting on the surface. In the foreground, you’ll explore more expressive mark-making to suggest wildflowers and grasses, adding movement and interest without losing the softness of the scene.
This is a beautifully balanced composition that combines loose, atmospheric areas with more defined detail, helping you to develop confidence in layering, restraint and working intuitively.
By the end of the session, you’ll have your own meadow painting to take home — a piece to feel proud of, with the understanding of how to refine or develop it further if you wish.
Held over four consecutive weeks, this course allows time to work slowly and thoughtfully, building layers and refining your composition to create a beautifully light-filled spring landscape. Your painting will feel complete by the end of the course, though, as with all layered work, it may continue to evolve with further refinement over time.
Held in a small, intimate group, there is plenty of opportunity for one-to-one tuition and personal support at every stage. All materials are provided, including quality paints, brushes and boards, so you can simply arrive and enjoy the creative process.
Suitable for all abilities, including beginners and improvers — no technical experience required, just a willingness to explore, learn and enjoy the process.
Each monthly course runs over four consecutive weeks, and every month we explore a completely fresh seasonal landscape, chosen to reflect the colours, light, and mood of the season. This keeps your learning experience varied, inspiring, and closely connected to the natural world.
To ensure accessibility, course days rotate each month between TUESDAYS and WEDNESDAYS.
Classes are small and informal, with a maximum of five students, allowing for individual guidance and attention to each stage of your painting.
