Spend a creative day at my Ditchling studio painting a winter woodland filled with golden light. Inspired by this snowy scene, we’ll explore the contrast between warm sunlight, cool shadows and the dark silhouettes of trees, creating a landscape with depth and atmosphere.

I’ll guide you through the painting step by step, from establishing your composition and softly lit background to building the trees, snow and foreground details. You’ll learn how to mix a harmonious winter palette, suggest distance and use highlights and shadows to bring the scene to life.

Working on a 42cm x 36cm board, you’ll explore how to build a convincing woodland scene using layered acrylic techniques, creating a sense of space, light and natural movement throughout the composition.

Throughout the day, you’ll learn how to simplify complex woodland forms, create depth through colour and tone, and capture the magical shafts of light streaming through the trees. We’ll focus on balancing detail with expressive mark-making, helping you develop a painting that feels both realistic and atmospheric.

With a maximum of five participants, this workshop offers plenty of individual guidance in a relaxed and supportive studio environment.

By the end of the day, you’ll leave with a completed woodland landscape and a deeper understanding of the techniques used to create light-filled, atmospheric countryside scenes — skills you can continue to develop and refine in your own work long after the workshop has finished.

Suitable for beginners and more experienced painters alike, this workshop offers a friendly and inspiring studio environment where you can develop new skills while creating your own atmospheric landscape to take home.

Practical Information

As this is a larger-scale composition with several stages to complete, we’ll be keeping the lunch break to 30 minutes to allow plenty of painting time throughout the day.

Please bring your own lunch and any snacks you may wish to have during the workshop. Light refreshments, including tea, coffee, and biscuits, will be provided.
